Born in Australia in 1985, Dean Fenech moved to Malta in 1994. He earned a B.A. in History of Art and Social Studies from the University of Malta in 2008 and a PGCE in Social Studies in 2010. Currently, he teaches Social Studies at a secondary school in Malta while also pursuing his career as a comic creator and educator.
He introduced his first graphic novel, “Apocalypse Rocked – Part 1 (Issue 1 and 2),” in 2011. The series continued with Issue 3 in 2013 and Issue 4 in 2014; these later issues were combined into a single collection, “Apocalypse Rocked – Part 2.” The story revolves around rock star superheroes in a post-apocalyptic world ravished by a virus.
His second series, “Times are -a-changing,” ran from 2015 to 2019. This series follows three Maltese characters and their descendants across different periods of Maltese history, ranging from Prehistory, the Romans, the Knights of St John, World War II, and a speculative, cyberpunk inspired, future.
Dean is currently working on a monthly comic strip called “L-Għalliema u l-Istudenti tal-Kulleġġ San Xi Ħadd,” published in the Maltese magazine “Sagħtar.” This series explores the antics of students and teachers at San Xi Ħadd College.
Beyond his own comics, Dean has co-authored a social studies textbook titled “Studji Soċjali – Nifhmu l-Genn tas-Soċjeta’,” used in Maltese secondary schools. He has also contributed illustrations to several works, including “Għetiebi Mikula,” “Ġrajjiet Żabbarin – Vjaġġ fiż-żmien ma’ Nina u Xandru,” “From the Vortex” and its sequel “To the Vortex,” “Il-Misteru ta’ taħt is-siġra tal-Ħarrub,” and “Avventuri fil-Mellieha.”
Dean is an active participant in the Malta Comic Con and has been involved in every edition since its inception. His engagement with the local comic community includes organizing workshops and discussion panels,and participating in various other artistic and comic-related events.
