Dean Fenech

Having been born in Australia in 1985, Dean immigrated to Malta in 1994. He attended Maria Bambina Mellieħa Primary School and Mikiel Anton Vassalli Boys’ Junior Lyceum Tal-Ħandaq. In 2008, he earned his B.A. in History of Art and Social Studies from the University of Malta, followed by a PGCE in Social Studies in 2010. Today Dean teaches Social studies at a Secondary school in Malta.

In addition to his teaching role, Dean is also a writer and artist. He introduced his first graphic novel, “Apocalypse Rocked – Part 1 (Issue 1 and 2),” in 2011. The series continued with Issue 3 in 2013 and Issue 4 in 2014, later combined into a single collection. The story revolves around rock star superheroes in a post-apocalyptic world plagued by a virus.

His second series is called “Times are -a-changing” ran from 2015 till 2019. This series follows three Maltese characters and their descendants across different periods of Maltese history, ranging from; Prehistory, the Romans, the Knights of St John, World War 2 and the future?

Dean is currently working on a monthly comic strip called “L-Għalliema u l-Istudenti tal-Kulleġġ San Xi Ħadd”. This series is published in the famous Maltese magazine “Sagħtar” and deals with a group of students and teachers in the San Xi Ħadd College and all the shenanigans they all get up to.

Dean is currently working on additional comic projects, which will be released in the future.

Beyond comics, Dean has co-authored a social studies textbook titled “Studji Soċjali – Nifhmu l-Genn tas-Soċjeta’” used in Maltese secondary schools. He’s also contributed illustrations to several works, including “Għetiebi Mikula,” “Ġrajjiet Żabbarin – Vjaġġ fiż-żmien ma’ Nina u Xandru,” “From the Vortex,” it’s sequel “To the Vortex” written by Ivan Ellul Xuereb, “Il-Misteru ta’ taħt is-siġra tal-Ħarrub,” written by by David Azzopardi and “Avventuri fil-Mellieha.”

An enthusiast of comic culture in Malta (and beyond), Dean has been an active participant in all thirteen editions of the Malta Comic Con.
