The latest entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise was released just last year, meaning it will be a while before fans can get hold of a new Assassin’s Creed game. As is the usual process, there is much speculation as to what setting the franchise will tackle next. From Egypt, where can Assassin’s Creed go?

Well, recent headlines confirm that the next setting will be during World War 2. But it’s not exactly what everyone thinks. A report by Games Radar reveals that Titan Comics is launching a new Assassin’s Creed mini-comics series in August. The new series is called Assassin’s Creed: Conspiracies and it follows assassin Eddie Gorm on his quest to thwart the Templars’ plan of unleashing an atomic weapon. It is written by Guillaume Dorison, who has previously written DmC: Devil May Cry: The Chronicles of Vergil. Meanwhile, the art has been created by Jean-Baptise Hostache, who worked on the cyberpunk comics series Clockwerx. Not much else was revealed, except a cover art depicting the protagonist set against London Bridge.

Titan Comics is no stranger to adapting video games onto the printed page. It has already developed comics for other popular titles such as FromSoftware’s Bloodborne, Arkane Studios’ Dishonored, and Bethesda’s Quake Champions. Titan Comics also recently released a comics series based on the popular multiplayer pirate adventure Sea of Thieves.

Although many parts of their narratives are fictional, the Assassin’s Creed games are known to be highly accurate when it comes to their historical depictions. For instance, a Harvard Egyptologist pointed out the historical accuracy of Assassin’s Creed: Origins in terms of Egyptian architecture, the death cults, and political strife. We can expect the same level of intensive research and detail for the World War 2-themed comics as well.

Moreover, a major constant in the Assassin’s Creed franchise are the Assassins’ sworn enemies, the Templar Order, a secret organisation that seeks to create a perfect world through powerful artefacts known as the Pieces of Eden. Throughout the games, members of the Templars were revealed to be actual historical figures such as Charles Lee, the Borgia family (which includes Pope Alexander VI), and even Thomas Edison.

Of course, the Templar Order actually existed, but they were mainly known in history books as the Catholic military order that led the Crusades. However, many conspiracy theories still surround the group, which led many entertainment companies to develop narratives around their fascinating background. While Assassin’s Creed may currently be the most famous one, there are other lesser known games involving the Templars. Digital game company Foxy Bingo has a library of games that are based around the time of the Knights Templar’s reign, such as Jewel in the Crown and Knights and Maidens. One key difference is that in these games, the Knights are depicted as heroes. However, the games do feature similar themes focusing on conquests and fighting in the name of the crown. This just goes to show that the Assassin’s Creed franchise frequently deals with popular historical settings and figures that help attract a wider audience.

While waiting for the new Assassin’s Creed comics, fans can still catch up on previous Assassin’s Creed issues released by Titan Comics. You can read our review on Assassin’s Creed Origins #3 to learn more.
