As anyone who’s familiar with our work at Wicked Comics can attest we created the annual Malta Comic Convention (which this year will be happening on Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December) to promote the comic culture. Thankfully we are not alone in this quest. So today we join one of our many virtual friends; Rob Wrecks the brains behind the awesome comic website IndieComiX were you can tune in to all the latest news about the hottest events in the world of comics, and read some pretty amazing independent comics reviews. In this concise but fascinating read Rob takes us through his journey that led to IndieComiX the site we all now love.

Now I will willingly admit to anyone that I’ve been reading comics since I was a little kid. Because as far as I’m concerned it’s nothing to be ashamed of! They, along with books like Goosebumps, for example, have been a large part of my life since my little kid days, something that really hasn’t changed too much for me. Though I do seem to read comics more and regular books less, likely because I’m more easily distracted these days! I’ll let you be the judge of that.

The comics I mainly read were Marvel with a little bit of DC at times, and it’s not because I was an absolute fan of Marvel growing up, even though I enjoyed what I read. It was mostly due to a lack of access to other titles. Plus lack of extra money to get that particular comic, a fact which would be my bane for years since I never really had the chance to read an entire storyline of any comic like X-Men. And if I did get my hands on something like say Bloodshot for instance, I didn’t really realize what I had and just went about my merry little way reading X-Men or Spider-Man or some other title.

It wasn’t until sometime in my twenties that I began to realize there was more out there in the world of comics then just Marvel and some occasional DC. Especially when I started hanging around other fellow comic book fans online. And later becoming a reviewer for Jay Katz’ InvestComics website. Through him and that position I had my eyes opened to a lot of great material out there. That fact and his friendship are two things I will always be grateful for.

After two years of working with Jay, first running a message board for his website and later the opportunity to write reviews, the eye opening wow moment grew into a love for the independent world of Comics.

Eventually in June 2012 after I left InvestComics I began to look into starting up my own website aimed at the Indies. It was with great thanks to a friend who likes to be known as Charles Xavier online that I learned of an easy to use build your own website that IndieComiX was then beginning to form. The name IndieComiX would also wind up being an idea given to me by my good friend David Paul, who also designed the site’s banner. I would later run his “JOSEPH!” strip on the site, which has been a ton of fun.

Since it began I’ve met some really great people. I also admit that at the beginning of the site’s creation I hadn’t intended to run news pieces. But later I realized it would probably be a good idea to do so, and after reaching out I was lucky enough to begin running them without any issues. A big thanks to Dan Nokes for practically jumpstarting that area, as well as Richard Boom later on!

As the site grew great folks like Derrick Crow, Jesse Brown, Neil Patel, Warren Wesson, and Ross Rivers came aboard and brought their own unique insight into comics. While others like Michael Pruitt, Mark A. Lester, and Tim Barklay were around for a short but awesome time. I am honestly proud of what I’ve started and it is my hope IndieComiX will be around for a long time to come and providing many with reviews on all sorts of titles they may never have heard of to check out and become fans of. Well folks, enjoy your day and remember to avoid those funny looking guys in the white coats!

Long live the Indies!
